Wellesley Contemporary

WELLESLEY, MA

Our clients came to us with an open piece of land and a desire to build a contemporary home in an eclectic, but traditional, neighborhood in Wellesley. An initial concern was if a contemporary design would receive the necessary approvals of the local Planning and Design Review boards. Our approach was to thoughtfully and respectfully address the neighborhood context while keeping a fundamentally forward-thinking design approach.

Although Contemporary in style, the house’s shape actually follows a traditional New England arrangement of a formal, symmetrical volume at the street with looser rambling elements toward the back. The house’s street-side facade has an entry portico, a stucco lower story, wood upper story, and a hip roof – all standard elements on this street. The stucco lower story becomes more free-form and glass-filled as it ambles to the back, in much the same way as the wood -clapboarded elements on the other house in the neighborhood. The landscape design is structured in its organization, but looser and more lush than a traditional landscape.
